Alberto Pitta

1961, lives and works in Salvador, Brasil.

Alberto Pitta was born in 1961, in Salvador, the city where he currently lives. He was watching the activity of his mother, the ialorixá Mãe Santinha de Oyá, who he saw awaken his interest in cloths. For over 40 years he has been dedicated to the research and creation of prints, costumes, props and allegories that characterize the visuality of the Afro blocks of Salvador's carnival. Pitta’s prints already colored the Filhos de Gandi, Ilê Aiyê and Olodum blocks, in whose artistic directorship he remained for 15 years. Pitta also created the Cortejo Afro, a block in which he introduced white on white, one of his most important style brands. It is noteworthy his work with the Oyá Institute, that arose from his mother's desire to contribute to the human, intellectual and the art of the children and the young people from the Pirajá neighborhood, where the Ilê Axé Oyá and his own studio are located. His curriculum also includes participation in several exhibitions around the world, in such as Germany, Angola, United States, France and England.
